Whether you’re shopping for a birthday, baby shower, or simply adding to your child’s home library, these “New Classic” picture books are sure to become fast favorites—beautifully illustrated, lovingly written, and just as delightful for grown-ups as they are for little readers.

As a former early literacy program director and mom of four, I’ve personally curated this list of board books and picture books that stand the test of repeat reads. These are the stories my own kids return to again and again—and the ones we’ve built cherished reading memories around. Treasured time reading together is the foundation of reading readiness!

But first, a quick story… When our oldest was in preschool, their teacher organized an end-of-year book exchange. Each child brought a handmade card and a copy of their favorite picture book, then passed the books around in a circle while music played. When the music stopped, each child landed on a new treasure. What followed was nearly an hour of sharing, talking about the books they brought, the stories they loved, and the ones they couldn’t wait to read. As a children’s literature–obsessed mama and former teacher, I was in heaven. That book we received? We still read it nearly seven years later. Thanks, Leona!

That memory is a beautiful reminder: the best gifts are the ones that spark connection. So here’s my gentle nudge to share the must-read kids’ books your little ones adore—those new classic picture books and board books that light them up. There’s something truly special about giving a story you love to someone you love.

We have brought this tradition home in a sense, and each holiday, we gift our children a ‘new to them’ book we love. Sometimes, one they have asked for, sometimes one I’ve picked up from a little free library, and always one that we will read over and over again.
